	　　在國際上最爲人津津樂道的咖啡因研究報告，首推2003年由Nawrot等人撰寫且經過同儕審查（peer-review）的咖啡因安全評估回顧文獻，最廣爲國際間引用，亦被加拿大衛生部作爲咖啡因最高攝取量建議的依據。 出版至今十數年間，雖然又累積超過一萬篇與咖啡因相關的論文發表，然而自該篇起再也沒有能與它齊名的評論文章問世。</div>

	　　國際生命科學會北美分會（ILSI North America）有感於此，決定更新該篇經典文獻，邀請15位包括流行病學、臨牀醫學和系統性回顧的專家，歷時逾2年的時間， 將2001年～2015年6月間發表的咖啡因潛在不良作用的數據進行系統性回顧（systematic review），以成年人、孕婦、青少年、兒童此4個健康族羣爲探討對象，對於急性毒性、心血管毒性、骨頭和鈣的影響、行爲、 發育與繁殖此5類結果，與加拿大衛生部的&ldquo;無不良作用咖啡因攝取量&rdquo;現行版本進行差異探討。</div>

	　　科學研究在釐清評價因果關係時，很注重科學證據強弱的分級。 若科學研究的結論只是來自專家意見（沒有實證數據支持），此類的科學證據強度是最薄弱的；而位於金字塔上半部的統合分析、系統性回顧和隨機對照實驗因能提供較高強度的科學證據，其可信度是較高的，但這類研究需耗費的資源，如經費、 人力和時間等，也相對比較高。</div>
